More than 30 applications were submitted for the position, according to acting director Berta Hammerstein. But the number was pared to 10 this week after each housing authority commissioner picked a personal list of 10 candidates after reading all the applications. "And there was a pretty good consensus from the commissioners on selection of the 10," Mrs.

Hammerstein said Tuesday. "And everyone acted independently." The selection committee, made up of Mrs. Hammerstein, Housing Authority Chairman Donald Balser and Commissioner Sondra Matthews, then compiled a list of 10 finalists, each of whom had been named on more than one commissioner's individual list. Interviews of the remaining candidates will begin the week of Nov. 16 with a selection expected in early December.

Mrs. ha Hammerstein said. In addition to the two from Evansville, six are from the Midwest, one is from Arizona and one is from Texas. "And several of the applicants are from public housing authorities both larger and smaller than ours," Mrs. Hammerstein said.

Mrs. Hammerstein said those from Evansville and the Midwest will be interviewed first. The exact format of the interviews has not been determined, Mrs. Hammerstein said. "We have to check with the lawyer." "Not all commissioners will be able to sit in on every interview, and you have to call an executive session if more than two commissioners will be there," she said.

California pair will hold seminar on creationism Two representatives of the Institute for Creation Research in El Cajon, science educator Richard Bliss and attorney Wendell Bird, will visit Evansville on Saturday to conduct a seminar on creationism. The pair will discuss how school systems can implement a "two-model approach" to the teaching of earth's origins and the beginning of life. Most public schools and some private schools teach only the theory of evolution in science classes and do not recognize creationism as a scientificallybased theory of origin. The seminar, which begins at 7 p.m.

in Vanderburgh Auditorium, is open to the public free of charge. The appearance by Bliss and Bird, both nationally known proponents of creationism, is sponsored by a local group called Citizens for Scientific Creationism in the Schools. Bliss will review the scientific, educational and religious aspects of creationism, and Bird will discuss the separation of church and state and its implications for creationism instruction in science classes. A group of parents asked the School Board in March to include creationism in the Evansville-Vanderburgh School science curriculum, but the board has indicated no plans to do so. Man arrested after 2 women chained to bed INDIANAPOLIS (AP) A 35-year-old Indianapolis man was arrested Tuesday on preliminary charges of criminal confinement with a deadly weapon after police received a report that two women were chained bed in a house. Charles Webster, 35, was being held, in the city jail Lt. Jerry Barker, a police department spokesman, said officers received a call about 7:30 a.m. from a man who had been in the house.

He reported that Joanie Blair, 29, owner of the home, and Rose Thurman, 21, were being held against their will. According to Barker, Webster, a former Martinsville resident, had lived in the house six to eight months, but Miss Blair told Webster to move out last week. He refused, and Miss Blair was handcuffed and Webster allegedly chained her to a bed during the past week, keeping her a virtual prisoner, according to Barker. She told police Webster had freed her for short periods. About 4 a.m.

Tuesday, Barker said Miss Thurman, a former roommate of Miss Blair, stopped by the house and Webster handcuffed and chained both women to a bed in the southeast coroner of the house on South Villa Street in the southeastern area of the city. Barker said there was a quantity of sado-masoch*stic and bondage material found on the scene including restraining devices and chains. Kenneth Beaver, 23, who police had been living in the house several months, left the house shortly before 7:30 a.m. and called reporting that a man had two women chained and that there were automatic weapons in the house. local school corporations when they adopt new textbooks.

When an Indianapolis parent filed suit challenging the commission's decision, the Marion County Superior Court ruled that the book was not constitutionally acceptable for use in public schools.
